I Used to be a Diet Whore

When Paleo became popular. I tried it.

When everyone and their mother was doing Atkins. I did it.

When Eating Clean was the thing. I embraced it.

  • Each time, I paid money.
Each time, I tried the diet.
Each time I put the weight back on.

I started feeling used.

I remember thinking to myself, it was time to stop whoring myself to diets in the name of losing weight and start changing for real.  This was no life for a classy gentleman like myself.

Let’s take it back

In recent years, you may recognize these popular diets.  Let’s take it back and understand the evolution of these trends:

  • 1992 - Food Pyramid - Major takeaway: “Fat is bad”
  • 2000’s - Atkins - Major takeaway: “Carbs are bad”
  • South Beach - Major takeaway: “Only Eat Good Carbs & Good Fats.”
  • Paleo - Major takeaway: “Fat is good, Carbs are bad and coconut oil solves everything from heart disease to pityriasis”
  • Zone - Major takeaway: You have to be Sheldon Cooper to figure this one out.

The bottom line: Each diet demonizes one thing (carbs or fat), and pedestals another (carbs or fat)

When will the insanity stop?

But you lose weight, right?

If you lose weight, I guess the means aren’t as important.  So as long as dieting works, I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t just lose the weight and then figure out the rest later.

Well… it’s not that simple.

According to recent diet statistics, dieting leads to three things:

  1. More dieting: If one diet doesn’t work, you just need to try another and another until you find one that works. For most, that means an endless jump from one diet to the next.
  2. Weight Obsession: Weighing yourself incessantly. Every day, sometimes a few times a day. That number, then dictates how you eat.
  3. Eating Disorders: You are probably thinking, “What eating disorders? You mean like anorexia or bulimia?” No. The most modern form of eating disorders is Workweek Syndrome.

Workweek Syndrome is eating really well from Monday -Friday, when you have your structure, your routine, and you are going to work. But, as soon as Friday night comes around, all inhibition goes out the window and you go to town on anything and everything.

There is nothing off limits.

The guilt ensues and you spend the next 5 days working the guilt off.

Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

This form of binge eating has become very dangerous. Way more dangerous than just having a “cheat day.” Binging is a new form of food disorder that can destroy the masses and it’s easier now than ever. You don’t even have to leave the house.

You want tacos, pizza, sushi, or some combination thereof? Just punch it into seamless.

You want 11LBs of Nutella? No worries, Costco gotcha.

More disturbing stats

50% of women are on a diet at any given moment
90% of teenagers diet regularly
What message have we sent to our sons and daughters?

95% of people who go on a diet, gain the weight back.
40% of people who go on a diet, put weight on.
There is more of a chance you gain weight than lose weight.

But it’s time to stop being a diet whore. On some level, y’all know diets don’t work. Diets are created in a lab, with controlled inputs, and measured outputs.

Diets don’t exist in the real world where you sit in traffic, work for 10 hours per day, get into fights with your husband or wife, and chase your kids.

Diets assume you live in a bubble. But you and I live in the real world.

The sooner you dump the euphoric and fairy tale idea of a diet, the sooner you can lose weight and keep it off with no residual effect.

The Anti-Diet Approach

….So then how do you lose weight without going on a diet?

The answer is the anti-diet.

The anti-diet is based on 3 things:

I. Food

  • Personal - You must eat foods you like and the right quantity of protein, carbs, and fat
  • Flexible - You must have flexible structure that can be applied in several different ways
  • Sustainable - You must eat different foods all the time
  • Constantly Varied - You must create options, not restrictions

You can’t eat based on the same menu, at the same time, with the same foods every single day. The more inflexible you're eating is, the more likely it is to break.

II. Your Attitude

  • Learn to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full
  • Learn to eat foods you like, not eating foods out of obligation
  • Learn to fail small
  • Stop, Smell, Chew

Who said this had to be complicated? Focusing on the basic attitudes so you enjoy every meal.

III. K.I.S.S.

Focus on one change at a time.

Keeping it simple is incredibly important. Focus on one change at a time. Once you change one behavior, move on to the next.

Closing Thoughts

Which food you eat is dependent on your tastes and goals—but the upshot is that the above strategies will help you stay on track, regardless of how you eat.

It doesn’t matter if you’re into fasting or paleo; taking control of the Mindset of weight loss and keeping it simple are two small are two necessary steps towards avoiding the best deceptions and walking the path to success.
