Intermittent Fasting or Intermittent Binging?

Intermittent Fasting(IF) is all the rage. It is one of the nation’s hottest ways to lose weight. If you are not familiar with Intermittent Fasting, which I will abbreviate from now on as "IF," then let me explain.

IF is simply limiting food intake to just eight hours each day OR severely restricting calories a few days a week and eating more a few days a week.

But here’s the most important question: Is IF just another diet? Or is it truly revolutionary?

Have you ever heard the phrase that "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck."

Everything about IF just feels like a diet. And if it feels like a diet, looks like a diet, it’s probably a diet.

That sounds exactly like Paleo, South Beach, Zone, Atkins, Mediterranean, etc.

And now that IF has been around for some time, here is the exactly what most people experience:

  • Intense cravings
  • Preoccupation with food
  • Rebound binge eating
  • Breaking their fast regularly

If You’re Not First, You’re Last!

You know who said this, a true American hero, Ricky Bobby. LOL. I know it’s ridiculous, but I just love this movie so damn much.

If you're not first, you're last

If you watched the movie, then you know Ricky Bobby lived his entire career by this one phrase. When he has a breakdown and his career falls apart, Ricky’s estranged father returns to help him get his career back on track.

When they get into an argument and Ricky asks him "What about what you said that one time on career day when I was in school?"

His Dad looks at him confused and replies, "I was high!"

He says, "that doesn’t make any sense, you can be 2nd, 3rd, 4th, hell you can even be 5th!"

Even though this is silly in the movie and it’s a ridiculous motto to live by, how many of us, deep down under, actually think this way?

I am:

  • "Smart or stupid."
  • "Popular or a loser."
  • "Rich or poor."

It was a long week and I fell off the wagon…

It starts off soooo innocent.

One longggggg night at work turns into pizza for dinner.

Pizza for dinner turns into a bagel for breakfast.

A bagel for breakfast turns into a burger for lunch.

A burger for lunch turns into pizza again for dinner.

What started off as a week with good intentions, meal prep, and a perfect Monday and Tuesday, gets fumbled by Wednesday night.

The week ends on a prolific bang: Sunday night cheeseburgers, fries, and the works!

Hamburger and fries

The Last Supper has been served.

Diet starts Monday.

Why “earning your carbs” is dangerous…

I was just cruising through facebook and saw a fellow nutrition coach wearing this shirt.

Tshirt saying "Earn Your Carbs"

And I’m pissed.

Today, there is no shortage of nutrition advice on the internet.

And they all make the same claims:

  • They all claim to be different.
  • They all claim they make nutrition simple.
  • They all claim to make it easier.
  • They all claim you don’t have to "diet anymore."

How Do You Get Motivated to Eat Right?

By far the #1 question I get all the time is “Joe, how do I even get motivated to start? I have so much going like…”

  • My kid(s)
  • An important and demanding job
  • A crazy schedule
  • Feeling tired all the time

And contrary to what everyone says, these are not excuses. They are important parts of your life.

But what if you looked at it in another way? What if you tried another angle?
What if you actually asked yourself the right questions? Questions that actually matter. I’m not talking about questions like “how much protein do you eat?” or “how many beers do you have per week?”

I’m talking about questions that really, really matter.
